I love watching movies. I love Action, Sci-Fi, Gangster/Crime, Comedy and Romance. But there’s only one genre I detest: Horror movies! The closest I can get to watching a scary movie is a Psychological Thriller!
I would like to share my favourite movies with you. These are the movies that I can’t get enough of, can talk about all day- everyday and have changed my life in some way! Starting with (in no particular order):
1.Coming to America
So this movie was released in 1988, the year I was born. I personally think that year was an amazing year. Loads of classics were produced and the Michael Jackson Bad tour was on at that time too. This movie cheers me up- every time! I binge watched this in my first year of Uni. I know most of the lines off by heart. One of my favourite scenes is the Sexual Chocolate performance at the Black Awareness Pageant and the fact that nobody applauded him before or after he left the stage! I am in tears every time this part comes on! Plus Eddie Murphy is genius, he wrote the story and had an amazing team to put it on screen.
This film was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. This was released in 2000. But I found out about the film a few years ago and was simply hooked. It is a psychological thriller and Christopher Nolan is excellent at messing with your head. This is like Interstellar, Inception etc where you are left totally confused! After watching it, several times, the entire storyline beings to opens up and make sense. It is beautifully written with excellent actors! The main characters are Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss.
I mean, if you haven’t watched all 3 parts then…where have you been? Featuring Al Pacino, that gave us Scarface. Marlon Brando that gave us Superman. Yes it is a long storyline!! But it is gripping and is the father of all mafia storylines. There was a time in my life where I was obsessed with mafia/gangster movies. I have watched them all and I believe this movie sparked that interest. I have watched Goodfellas, Casino etc. My favourite scene is where Don Vito Corleone passes away peacefully and quietly in his back garden as his grandson waters the plants. Check it out (All rights belong to Alfran Productions & Paramount Pictures) :
‘If you know, you know!’*Pusha T voice* I think every black girl has imagined that her true love would enter into her life like this! Am I wrong? The soundtrack to this movie is simply amazing too! Sanna Lathan gave us the cult classic Love and Basketball with Omar Epps but returned with Taye Diggs who gave us Best Man. And again, ‘if you know you know!’. These are like the upper echelon of black movies. I loved the fact that Sanaa Lathan’s character called Sidney was a music journalist who was promoted to Editor-in-chief for a Hip-hop magazine called XXL (one of my dream jobs) and her love interest Andre played by Taye Diggs was a A&R for a record company. I mean, doesn’t that already sound interesting? The cast are incredible and there are loads of funny moments as well as heartfelt ones. My favourite scene is Andre’s artists called Ren and Ten when they were in the studio recording their song “The Hoe is Mines” inspired by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney ‘The Girl Is Mine’ And Andre’s reaction was like “WTH?!” They were a joke much like new school Hip-Hop but don’t get me started.
I know that Star Wars is probably the longest movie in the world. It has 6 parts and now a whole new sequel is in the process of being made. But I prefer the original and I got hooked on it about 5 years ago. I spent a whole day watching 1 to 6 and it was so comforting to watch, at the time of my life. This is ironic because I used to hate Star Wars growing up and my older cousin used to play it, every Christmas. He would try to get me into it and I just wasn’t having it. I would be so upset and end up falling asleep. It came out in the cinemas a while ago and I just loved it. Once I got into Star Wars, I started to have an appreciation for other Sci-Fi movies like X-men and other Marvel and DC movies. My favourite scene is the classic “Luke…I am your father,” scene.
